Refractive lens exchange is an option for some patients to reduce their need for glasses who do not yet meet insurance guidelines for cataract surgery and/or are not LASIK patients. In this case, the lens is removed like regular cataract surgery, and an intraocular lens is placed, usually a multifocal lens that will correct for distance and near vision. Since it is an elective procedure, most insurance companies do not cover the cost of refractive lens exchange, similar to LASIK surgery.
